Self Care; what is it and why is it important?

Self Care

Self care is a term many people will have heard over the years, and is a concept that is important for EVERYONE. But there are significant differences between hearing the term, understanding it, and actually practicing it.

What is self-care?

Put simply, self-care is the act of taking care of ones self. Not just on a physical level, but also spiritually, socially, and emotionally. Self-care is doing things that make you feel good and bring balance to your life; ensuring that you apply this practice to every area of your life.

What areas should your self-care focus on?

Check out the simple image below, for a guide to what areas you can look at for self-care. Ideally, a good self-care plan will have at least one strategy for each area, but you can also include as many as you think is needed to achieve optimal results. Some areas may need more focus than others.

Why is it important?

Self-care helps us to maintain a happy and positive relationship with our own mind and body. It is almost impossible for us to take care of others if we don't first take good care of ourselves and make sure all of our own needs are being met. This might sound selfish, but it's not. It is vital that our needs as human beings are met, before we can have the energy and dedication to meet other peoples needs.

Self-care can help reduce stress levels, and assist in preventing the inevitable lows from being even lower. It help to ensure that we can continue to function properly and live our lives to the fullest.

Listening to music

Making sure you get enough sleep

Eating well

Spending time with friends

Spending time with family

Removing people form your life that are toxic/abusive

Exercising or playing a sport

Art and craft

Make time for your hobbies or learn a new hobby

Take a holiday

Go on an adventure (ie. to a new town or place you haven't been too)

Practice your faith/beliefs

Practice yoga or meditation

Take your medications as prescribed
